Bamboo forest in Arashiyama, Japan

Arashiyama and Sagano, lying at the base of Kyoto’s western mountains, is second only to the Higashiyama area as the most important sightseeing district in Kyoto.

Arashiyama is the known for the beautiful maple and cherry trees that cover its foothills. It is also known for its bamboo forests, where in feudal times the Japanese aristocracy came to enjoy the clam and peace of this area.

It is a region of bamboo forests, wooded groves and temples surrounded by nature.  The bamboo stalks are formidable in size: as large as an arm. The bamboo is very high, at ten meters or more.

Near Kyoto, it is a thick grove of tall bamboo with a walking path that leads from the Tenryuji Temple to the villa complex of Okochi Sanso. It passes though moss gardens and tea houses.

The sound of wind blowing through bamboo, of stems knocking against one another and leaves rustling, is revered in Japan.
