Sepilok forest reserve

The Sepilok forest covers 4,294ha tropical forest. Sepilok forest is well known internationally for the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC).

Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre is located at Batu 14-14 miles from Sandakan. The centre was established in 1964; it now covers 40 sq miles and has become one of Sabah’s top tourist attractions. The primary aim of the centre is to rehabilitate displaced orang-utans.

The Sepilok Forest Reserve is composed primarily of dipterocarps, with the most common large trees in their area being Shorea spp., Dipterocarpus spp., and Hopea spp., whose canopy can reach 40 to 50 m.

The forest also contains a wealth of natural wildlife, including orang-utan, leaf monkeys and gibbon.
