Caxiuanã National Forest

Caxiuanã National Forest is a 330,000 hectare protected area mainly covered by tropical forest (85%), flooded forest (12%), and secondary vegetation and unforested areas (3%).

The primary forest contains about 1013 species of plants, classified in 189 families.

Caxiuanã National Forest is a national forest located in the municipalities of Melgaco and Portel, approximately 400 km southwest of Belem. The forest is located southeast of the Ilha do Marajo.

The area is situated in the Caxiuanã Bay, a black water river system with a relatively acidic pH.

The soil composition is a sandy loam (70-83%) with the water table at 15-20 m depth.

The Caxiuanã region has a moisture deficient between the end of June and November.

The wet season starts in January and lasts until June, with a great deal of rainfall January and June. Caxiuanã is known for its biodiversity and geographic location.

Most trees flower either during the dry season or the transition from dry to wet season, and fruit mostly during the wet season.
